Nobody is waiting for your deck (yet): how indie creators find their people

2026-07-04 · all notes

Here's the fear, in one creator's words after seven years of painting: "I have stared at this for so long that I can't tell anymore whether it has any appeal outside my own head. Do you have to be really good at marketing? I don't have a big audience."

You don't have to be good at marketing. But you do have to start before you're finished.

Ads don't work for decks. Sharing does.

One creator who documented his launch in detail surveyed thirty fellow deck creators about paid advertising: twenty-three never used ads, five tried and lost money, and only two made them work. He personally spent over five thousand dollars on ads and regretted it.

What worked instead, for almost everyone: showing the work as it happened. A card a week. The sketch next to the finished painting. The community threads full of "deck in progress" posts exist because following a deck being born is the product. People back the journey, not just the object.

The weekly reveal is the whole strategy

That last point is where most creators improvise: a Mailchimp form pasted into a Reddit comment, a "DM me to hear when it's out." It works, barely. The stronger version is a page that shows your progress, collects followers, and emails them when cards drop, where you keep the list. (Kickstarter's own pre-launch pages never give you the emails; whatever you use, make sure the list is yours.)

Why the list matters more than a following

Pre-launch followers convert to buyers at roughly twice the rate of people who stumble onto a live campaign. A few hundred people who chose to follow your deck specifically beat ten thousand passive Instagram followers, because launch day is a room, and the list is who shows up.

Every deck on Foolmade gets that page for free: progress bar, weekly reveals, comments, and a follow list you can export and keep. But the principle holds whatever tool you use: start sharing at card one, not at the very last.

Making a deck? Foolmade is the production studio for indie tarot & oracle creators: print checks, mockups, and a page that gathers your people.
