Temperance

from The Jean Noblet Tarot, c. 1650-1659

Numbered X.IIII; the title strip reads LEMPERANCE, this cutter's rendering of Temperance. A winged woman tips liquid from one jug into another, red and gold wings spread, hair loose. The gesture, mixing water into wine, is the old emblem of moderation, and it has hardly changed in four centuries.
