Le Pendu

from The Jean Noblet Tarot, c. 1650-1659

Numbered X.II. The Hanged Man dangles by one foot from a red beam laid across two lopped trees, hands behind his back, hair streaming down. In Italy the upside-down pose was how traitors were painted on walls in disgrace; the trump kept the gallows and slowly traded shame for mystery.
