A hand grips a single rough-hewn branch, still knotted where the twigs were cut. Papus's batons are raw wood throughout the suit, closer to cudgels than to the ceremonial staves of later decks. The lower panel carries a letter of the Archeometre, the universal alphabet of Saint-Yves d'Alveydre.
