An old man in a hooded mantle lifts a lantern half wrapped in his cloak, leaning on a knotted cane, while a serpent rears from the ground before him. In Wirth's reading the hermit does not crush the snake, he studies it; the partly hidden lantern is prudence, light shown only as far as it is needed.
