Roy de Coupe

from The Conver Tarot de Marseille, blocks of 1760; this printing c. 1809-1833

A bearded king in a wide turned-up crown-hat sits with a great lidded cup in one hand, his throne set on a tiled floor. The vessel resembles a hanap, the covered ceremonial goblet of French feasts, an object the carvers knew from guild halls.
