Imperator

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A bearded emperor seated under a tent-like canopy, crowned, holding an orb, his legs crossed, with an eagle at his feet. The crossed legs are a medieval sign of a judge or ruler in his seat of authority, and the eagle is the imperial bird. The lettering reads IMPERATOR VIIII; the card is ninth of ten in the conditions of man.
