Rhetorica

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A crowned woman in a heavy cloak, a drawn sword in one hand, and at her feet two small winged children blowing long trumpets. Rhetoric, the art of persuasion, armed and proclaimed. The sword and the trumpeting putti are the engraver's own invention; the plain architectural ground and the richly ornamented cloak are typical of the whole arts group.
