Le Pendu
from The Conver Tarot de Marseille, blocks of 1760; this printing c. 1809-1833
A young man hangs by one foot from a beam laid across two lopped trees, hands held behind his back, his free leg crooked at the knee. Hanging upside down was how Italian towns pictured traitors in shame paintings; his untroubled face led later readers toward voluntary sacrifice instead.
