Le Diable

from The Conver Tarot de Marseille, blocks of 1760; this printing c. 1809-1833

A devil with bat wings, breasts and clawed feet stands on a pedestal, a torch raised in one hand, while two small horned creatures stand roped to it by the neck. The mixed anatomy is deliberate; the Marseille devil is a body assembled against nature, part animal, part man, part woman.
