Force majeure

from The Grand Etteilla, printed c. 1875-1899, to Etteilla's design of 1788

A winged devil with a torch stands on a pedestal, a chained imp at either side. It is the Marseille Devil almost line for line, but the keyword is Force majeure both upright and reversed: overwhelming force, whichever way it lands.
