La Prudence
from The Grand Etteilla, printed c. 1875-1899, to Etteilla's design of 1788
A woman lifts the hem of her skirt and looks down at a snake on the ground, a caduceus over her shoulder. Etteilla held that the Hanged Man was an engraver's blunder and set Prudence, the missing fourth virtue, in its place at number 12. Upright La Prudence, reversed Le Peuple.
