A half-naked beggar leaning on a staff between two bare trees, ragged cloak over his shoulders, a broken wall behind and two dogs sniffing at his heels. The bottom third of this sheet was lost long ago and redrawn by hand in pen, which is why the lower edge looks softer than the rest of the set. Misero, the wretch, is the lowest rung of the ladder the first ten cards climb.
