Temperancia

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A woman in a long mantle pouring water from one jug into another, the two vessels faintly gilded, a small animal, usually called an ermine, at her feet. Temperance, with the same two jugs she carries in every tarot deck, but here she is one of seven numbered virtues rather than a trump. The ermine stands for purity in fifteenth century emblem books.
