Mercurio

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

Mercury standing in a winged hat and boots, playing a pipe, his caduceus with two entwined serpents held up before him, a cock and a severed head at his feet. The head is Argus, the hundred-eyed guard Mercury lulled to sleep and killed; the cock is another of his animals. Lettered MERCVRIO XXXXII on the plate.
