Terpsicore

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A muse standing with a small lute or cittern held against her chest, a gilded disc at her feet, a city on the horizon across a lake. Terpsichore is the muse of dance and choral song. The Muses here hold instruments and discs rather than their later fixed attributes; scholars have pointed out that the set follows a particular fifteenth century text on the Muses rather than classical sources.
