Erato

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A muse seen from the side, bending slightly to tap or examine a drum-like disc held in both hands, a swan and a gilded disc at her feet and a hilltown behind. Erato is the muse of lyric and love poetry. The swan, which turns up again under Clio and Apollo, is an attribute of Apollo and here seems to mark the whole Muse group.
