Talia

from The Mantegna Tarocchi, c. 1465

A muse seated on the ground between two small trees, holding a viol and bow across her lap, looking back over her shoulder. Thalia is the muse of comedy and pastoral poetry, which may explain the seated, rustic setting. The early literature sometimes called this group the nine Muses with Apollo as their chorus leader, which is exactly what the next four cards complete.
